I went to the Atlanta Greek Festival!

On Saturday I went to the Atlanta Greek Festival with some friends. I went there not to learn about the culture, but to taste all the food. And I must say that I as not disappointed. Here is a list of all of the foods I tried:

Souvlaki and Chicken Combo: This combo included Greek marinated chicken, souvlaki, rice, green beans, tiropita, and a roll. I was starving so I ate the entire thing. At first the rice tasted a bit bitter, but after eating the chicken I got used to it and it wasn’t so bad. Souvlaki was pork tenderloin on a stick and it was pretty good. The chicken breast was also delicious, but chicken is chicken. The tiropita was shaped like a triangle and it kind of reminded me of a cream cheese wonton.

Baklava Sundae: The baklava topping mixed with the hot fudge was a great combination. the nutty and gooey texture mixed with the smoothness of the ice cream made it a wonderful experience for my mouth. I thoroughly enjoyed the ice cream and I wish I knew of a place that served those type of sundaes on the regular.

Galaktoboriko: This was one of my favorite pastries. At first I was worried about the flavor of the custard, but it was really sweet and kind of familiar. I told the cashier that I would probably save the pastries for the next day and she recommended that I eat the Galaktoboriko first because it tasted better when warm. She was absolutely right. The custard sort of melted in my mouth. I wish I had bought two of these instead of just one.

Loukoumades: This was essentially a fried dough ball covered in honey and cinnamon. It was a Greek donut. I bought a dozen and the lady gave me an extra one for a baker’s dozen. I love fried dough no matter what form it is in so I definitely had to get some of these and I’m happy I did. Because they were just little balls it was a fast and sticky treat. Loukoumades would  probably taste great with hot chocolate. They were selling Greek Frappes with them, but I don’t drink coffee so  I didn’t get any. I understand pairing them together.

Baklava: It had flaky top layers and was nutty and gooey on the bottom. At first, I didn’t like it when I first took a bite. Nut as I ate it more and more it became more sweet and yummy. Sometimes the flaky stuff would cut my mouth, which I thought was weird because I didn’t expect it to be so sharp.

Kourabiedes: There were powdery wedding cookies and they tasted how I expected them to taste. A regular powdered cookie.

I didn’t think that I would like much of the food because I’m a picky eater, but I actually liked everything that I tried. I wouldn’t mind finding a Greek restaurant or bakery to eat these items again. Especially the galaktoboriko!
