The day after Thanksgiving, I went to see Jhene perform at The Masquerade. While I was standing in line I saw Lakeith Stanfield from Get Out and Atlanta. I was surprised that he was just standing in line like a normal civilian, but people didn’t seem to bother him much.
When I got inside, there were already a lot of people towards the front so I didn’t think I would have a chance of getting close to the front. But I guess God was looking out because a girl passed out. How and why she passed out I don’t know because she wasn’t outside and prey to the weather that wasn’t bad. The concert doors opened at 7 and we were out by 11 so she wasn’t standing that long. She might’ve had some kind of condition but she was fine after they gave her some water and helped her up. Maybe she was really dehydrated. But she didn’t want to leave so she was okay. As soon as the medics and security left, there was an opening for me to move closer to the front so I’m not happy that the girl fell out, but I am happy for the opportunity her falling out gave me. Jhene just kept on singing while this happened. She tried to tell them to move the girl out of the crowd.
Jhene’s set up was pretty cool because she made it seem like we were actually going on a journey to trip out on some stuff. Before she began performing, there was an announcement similar to what you hear when you’re on a plane. She warned us that there would be strobing lights and no flash photography. She had a LED wall that went a long with all of her songs and helped with transitions. For the song ‘Sativa’ ft. Swae Lee, she had images of him on the wall. And in between songs there would be a silhouette of her head facing the left and she would stop and turn to the left while the interlude played out. At the end of ‘Bad Trip’ she actually acted like she was freaking out. While performing ‘Psilocybin’, she had a sing along and had the lyrics on the screen with a mushroom bouncing on the words.
It was a great experience and I loved how she brought some people on stage with her. They were VIP people, but fans nonetheless. Jhene also threw flowers into the crowd and people were fighting for them. I caught one by the stem and someone literally grabbed the top of the flower and pulled it off. Even though I only got the stem of the flower, I still had fun. I don’t know how to look after flowers anyway.
