Steven Universe: Stranded

On the Steven Universe special that aired yesterday, everybody finally got to see what Lars was doing. I honestly thought that he was going to be living in a cave with the off color gems and have tattered clothes. I didn’t expect him to be piloting a space ship and actually be the leader of the off colors.  I understand that he was courageous and risked his life to save Paparadscha and died, but that doesn’t mean he would become a different person. Maybe when he died and was given another chance at life, he realized he shouldn’t be such a jerk? Even though he was already starting to grow into a better person before his death. I honestly don’t think it was necessary for him to die in order to become a better person, but he’s already dead. Anyway, Lars is now a risk taker and a captain! There are also fanmade pictures of a crossover of him and Kamina from Gurren Lagann and I love it!

When Steven showed him the pictures of Sadie and he started to get jealous that she was hanging out with the cool kids. I thought he would immediately revert back to being petty. He almost caused the destruction of everybody on the ship. Thankfully, he snapped back and made the boss decision to do nothing. I wanted to know more about his adventures and what the off colors had been doing until that point, but of course the special focused more on Stevonnie.

I get that everything has to be realized through Steven, but he’s starting to get a little annoying to me. I want to know about other people and their lives without Steven being involved. He’s the youngest character and yet his opinions are always so advanced as if he knows everything about relating to other people.

Going back to Stevonnie,  I love that they were stranded on another planet! I say they because Stevonnie is neither boy or girl. They are an experience! The rules of gender don’t really apply when it comes to them. For a while, I had viewed Stevonnie as a woman, but I love how they were given facial hair to emphasize  that they are a fusion of a boy and a girl. The facial hair could also be used to show that women also have facial hair. Either way, I loved that facial hair was included in their design.

I feel like the special was kind of the resolution to Connie and Steven’s disagreement. Connie felt like Steven left her behind and they were both supposed to fight against the Diamonds together. And this special showed how they would behave in a foreign world without anybody to guide them.  I felt like Connie’s camping skills were coming in handy. And it was interesting to see them kill their own food and their reluctancy to do so.

I also loved how we finally get to see Pink diamond through Stevonnie’s dream. When the dream started off in Connie’s living room, and her mom became Yellow Diamond, it completely made sense to me because they’re a fusion so a mix of dreams makes sense. The thing that didn’t make sense to me was how Steven’s ability can extend to the past. I still don’t completely understand how he can experience what the diamonds experience, but I thought it would only be possible if they were on the same planet. I didn’t realize that it could be felt as long as he went to the same locations as a diamond despite the gap in time. He can literally feel what they feel in real time and in the past while he’s dreaming. There is much to be learned from and about his abilities.

From the flashback, we discovered that Pink Diamond was a bit of a brat. We already knew that Earth was her first colony, but she probably didn’t conquer it herself. PD was probably given the Earth as a test to see whether she had what it took to successfully colonize on her own. And as we already know, her own gems rebelled against her and the other Diamonds sacrificed PD and her army in a desperate effort to take out the enemy gems. We also see see that Yellow Diamond is annoyed by PD and wants her to mature. Even though YD comes off as cold hearted and super structured, we got a glimpse of how she feels about PD’s death in ‘That Will Be All’. YD probably didn’t want PD to die, but it’s obvious that she knows what happened because she tries to end the trial when Blue Diamond starts asking questions and getting close to the truth.

My theory is that even though YD cared for PD, she either planned PD’s extermination or didn’t intervene because she was ordered to stand down. YD will never let her emotion get in the way of what needs to be done. Therefore, she did what was best for the greater good.

Or, she was okay with getting rid of PD because she saw her as a nuisance. Maybe YD shed tears with BD because she regretted playing a part in making BD sad. Either way, YD knows how PD really died.
