‘A Quiet Place’ Had Me Yelling

First of all, the title is a lie. I wanted to yell, but I didn’t want to be loud and ruin the movie for the people watching it with me. But if I was alone or at my house I would’ve been screaming at the screen for most of the movie. The screams wouldn’t be from fear, I would just be yelling at the characters to get their act together unless they want to die. This article is full of spoilers so if you haven’t seen it I suggest you look at another one of my articles. Or you can just do what you want. Who am I to tell you what to do?

At the very beginning, I wanted to yell at that little boy because he was running around in the store and I thought he was going to knock something over. The rest of his family just let him be while knowing full well that those creatures were out there. When he almost dropped that toy, I was like why is nobody watching him. This is ridiculous. From that part alone I knew the family was reckless. Thankfully the dad told him he couldn’t bring the toy because it was too loud. I was like finally someone with some sense. When the deaf daughter let her brother have the toy, I didn’t blame her. The toy would’ve been harmless and quiet without those batteries. But of course the child is disobedient. He wants what he wants and he clearly wants to die.

I had no idea why they would let a child walk behind them as if he knew better. But that lesson was learned quick. Unfortunately, the lesson caused the child’s life. The lesson also scared the shit out of me and made everywhere know that anybody in the film could die at any moment. The child’s death also established the strained relationship between the daughter and the father.

Throughout the film, there’s tension between the daughter and father because of the little boy’s death. She feels like he doesn’t love her and he loves her because he doesn’t let her do certain things; hunting and going into his surveillance room. But if you think about it, he probably did it for her own protection. Since she’s deaf she doesn’t know when she’s making a noise so it would be easier to keep her in a familiar place. Furthermore, he was probably working on all of those earpieces so she could hear when she made a sound so she wouldn’t put everybody’s life in danger.

I understand that the dad killed himself to save the kids, but his death was so unnecessary. The monsters can’t see so all he had to do was be quiet. Plus, his death was almost in vain because the boy wanted to yell out “Dad!!” knowing that the monsters would come for him next. This part made me want to yell out in anger because that boy was so afraid of making noise for the entire movie, but now he want to yell because his dad died for him? So you just gonna waste your dad’s sacrifice? It made no sense to me. Yelling isn’t going to bring him back or do anything but lead the monsters right to you fool. I guess my yelling at him won’t stop him from yelling either. Especially since he’s in a movie and can’t hear me. Maybe the yelling made him feel better because yelling at the screen would’ve made me feel better. Going back to the dad’s death, I thought it was such a great show of love for the daughter. Now it’s confirmed that he always loved her, but she’ll never see him again.

Another interesting aspect of the film was when the deaf daughter found out that the high frequency from her hearing aid could weaken the monsters. Even though being deaf left her at a disadvantage against the monsters with super hearing, she was able to find their weakness. The high frequency was enough to bother her even though she couldn’t hear so it left the monster with super hearing disoriented. In a way, all of the father’s research and work on hearing aids wasn’t in vain. I felt better knowing that even though he was their main protector, the family would be able to defend themselves against the monsters now.

Though the ending was great, I can’t not talk about the mom. Bruh!! After seeing one child die, you think they would say nah we don’t need to have anymore children. Instead they want to bring a whole, loud newborn child into a world where sound equals death. Actually now that I think about it, it was probably really weird having silent sex. I wonder how they pulled that off….Anyways, it was great that they decided to put the baby in a sound proof box underground. I didn’t think that would work. I would’ve thrown the baby at the monster when I saw it swimming underwater, or at least let the monster have it. This woman went into the water to save the baby. She’ll make a great mom, but I couldn’t do it. I also thought she was going to die when she stepped on that nail. It went through her whole foot and she didn’t make a sound. If anything, it showed the strength of women because she was in pain from labor and the nail and she didn’t make a peep. I screamed internally with her because I couldn’t even imagine the pain.

‘A Quiet Place’ succeeded in showing that a family with children could actually live in a world without sound and that women are badass. But everybody should already know that.

How long do you think you would last in a world without sound? Let me know in the comments.
