I can’t believe the last Steven Universe episode I watched! For those that haven’t caught up with the series, this article contains a lot of SPOILERS!
Basically everything I thought I knew about Rose was a lie and nobody could figure out who really killed Pink Diamond because Pink Diamond never died. Pink diamond staged her death by getting Pearl to transform into Rose and pretend to kill her. Then, Pink diamond lived the remainder of her life on Earth has Rose Quartz.
Some of the things that pointed to Rose actually being Pink Diamond include Steven’s abilities and dreams. Steven has a wide range of powers with his gem. He can heal cracked gems and he can bring people or organisms back to life. In fact, his powers are close to that of a God. I’m not trying to get religious, but the Diamonds pretty much are Gods in their society. It would make sense for them to have the ability to restore lower gems if they became damaged. Also the ability to bring people back to life and make them a portal is not something a regular quartz can do. Amethyst and Jasper are just meant to be soldiers and destroy enemies. If Rose was also a quartz then she would be the same and there would be no need for her to have such amazing healing capabilities. Therefore, Steven’s abilities are beyond that of a normal quartz.
Furthermore, when Steven could feel Blue Diamond’s sadness when she came to mourn PD on Earth I thought it was strange. Why would he be able to feel what a diamond was feeling? Nobody else even knew she was on Earth or had been coming to Earth that entire time. Even when he had that strange dream while Stevonnie was stranded on that planet. He was literally accessing Pink Diamond’s memories. At first I couldn’t understand why he could see Pink Diamond’s past and still experience Blue Diamond’s present, but since Pink Diamond is a part of him then of course he should be able to see her memories. Also, maybe the Diamond’s have a way of mentally communicating with each other. Steven can see Blue Diamond’s thoughts, but she can’t see his because she thinks Pink Diamond is dead.
During the dream on the moon base, Steven sees that Pearl was going to kill Pink Diamond with a sword, but there are other important elements in that dream as well. Before Pearl appears, Blue Diamond tells Pink Diamond that she keeps giving excuses like the rebellion and the unruly humans. Blue Diamond basically tells Pink Diamond that she only has to exist and be present for the colony to be completed. In other words, Pink kept trying to get rid of her colony and let Earth be, but Blue and Yellow only heard excuses. Thus, Pink came up with the idea to stage here death. If she was no longer present, the colony could no longer be completed.
Another aspect ‘A Single Pale Rose’ that I think is worth mentioning is Pearl’s attire. The other Pearls were either completely yellow or completely blue, but Pearl had on blue, yellow, pink, and white. I don’t know if Pearl served all of the diamonds or if she was specifically made to help with colonization of other planets or what. Maybe Pearl could choose what diamond she wanted to be loyal to? I just thought it was worth noting.
Although I previously viewed Pink Diamond as a brat from Steven’s first dream about her, I now see that PD is a selfless diamond. Either she’s selfless or she just does what she wants out of curiosity. PD could have remained an all powerful Diamond and ruled Earth with no issues. Instead she gave up her status and identity for other beings. She wanted to understand the world around her instead of changing it to fit her needs. She gave up her privilege in order to Yes she lied to the other Crystal Gems about who she was, but they were able to live as themselves because of it. Also just because she was Rose Quartz, doesn’t mean that her personality and the support she gave them wasn’t genuine. Pink Diamond honestly had to conceal her secret because if she hadn’t have sworn Pearl to secrecy, Yellow and Blue would’ve found out and come back to Earth. They probably would have taken her away and shattered her. At least the mystery of what really happened to Pink Diamond has been solved. Hopefully the diamonds never find out and the crystal gems don’t break up over the discovery.
